Katarina Witt started ice skating when she was five. It was her chance to demonstrate her skills and get into the Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted kids. At this school, she was introduced to her teacher Jutta Muler. Witt achieved her breakthrough by finishing second in the 1982 World Championships, held in Copenhagen. The grace and elegant style of Witt drew the attention of the world and she's dominating her sport since then. Olympic success at Sarajevo, in the Sarajevo Winter Games of 1984, Katarina Witz won the ladies' silver medal in figure skating following a close-fought competition. After four years, the event, she was able to take home an even tighter race. Although she lost in the competition for free skating, the gold was awarded for her performances on the mandatory figures, as well as on the short program. Witt became the very first repeat woman to win the women's figure skating in the sport since Sonja Henie. Hall of Fame Witt was capable of returning to figure skating after her accomplishments as a film actress. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. Although she didn't take home a single gold medal, she enchanted fans despite finishing seventh. Witt was admitted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in the year 1995.
